Weekend in Guilin

Weekend in Guilin

Trip Overview

This lean two-day Guilin plan pairs the famous scenery with back-alley flavors. Dawn on the11-kilometre Li River drifts you between jade pinnacles, later you climb for rooftop views, then slurp Guilin rice noodles while hawkers shout and woks crackle. Evenings mean sunset beers on a river veranda and moonlit walks beside old canals. Early starts, slow afternoons, classic sights without the sprint.

1

Li River Dawn & Old Town After-Dark

Central Guilin
Dawn on the river, market noodles for breakfast, climb for a rooftop view, beers beside ancient canals after dark.
Morning
Li River bamboo raft from Yangdi to Nine-Horse Mural Hill
Check out at 5:30 am, reach the pier, and step onto slim bamboo rafts driven by quiet electric motors. Mist wraps limestone towers, kingfishers flash overhead, first light gilds the peaks, and the smell of river reeds rides the water.
2.5 hours $35
Tell hotel concierge the night before. They fix the 6:30 am minivan to Yangdi pier.
Lunch
Chongshan Rice Noodles on Jiefang Road
Guilin rice noodles with pickled long beans and chili oil
Afternoon
Climb Folded Brocade Hill (Diecai Shan) for 360° city views
Stone steps climb through bamboo to Wind-Cave Pavilion where cool air spills from a karst tunnel. At the top, red prayer ribbons snap and you can track the turquoise Li River curling between apartment blocks and jagged spires.
2 hours $6
Evening
Dinner and night stroll along East-West Alley
Order stir-fried snails with pickled chili at Xiao Nan Guo, then wander lantern lanes where vendors sell osmanthus cakes and sugar-cane juice.

Where to Stay Tonight

Two Rivers & Four Lakes scenic area (Lijiang Waterfall Hotel)

Stroll to night markets and river promenades. Rooms look straight at lit-up karst hills mirrored in the lake.

2

Reed Flute Cave & Tea-Scented Countryside

North-west Guilin
Neon-lit stalactites underground, a country tea garden, sunset over Elephant Trunk Hill.
Morning
Guided tour of Reed Flute Cave
Inside the cavern, colored lamps turn dripping stalactites into glass chandeliers. The air tastes mineral-cool, guides name shapes, dragons, pagodas, while drops ping like guzheng strings.
1.5 hours $12
Lunch
Yangshuo Beer Fish at Ronghu Restaurant
Local freshwater fish braised in beer and chili
Afternoon
Cycle to Daxu Ancient Town via countryside tea fields
Hire an e-bike and glide along raised paths between emerald paddies. Pull into a family tea plot. The owner pours floral osmanthus oolong while the breeze carries wet earth and fresh-cut grass.
3 hours $25 (bike plus tea tasting)
Pick up bikes at the kiosk by Ronghu Lake. Helmets included, no booking required.
Evening
Sunset climb of Elephant Trunk Hill and lakeside dinner
Watch the sun drop behind pagoda roofs, then nibble steamed taro cakes and lotus-leaf sticky rice at Guilin Ren Restaurant above Shanhu Lake.
