Where to Stay in Guilin
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Guilin splits into a walkable historic core around its celebrated lake system and a broader spread of quieter residential districts where prices drop sharply. The Two Rivers Four Lakes area puts illuminated ancient walls and karst peaks within easy walking distance. Hotels here command a premium. The Li River waterfront suits travelers wanting morning mist views before boarding a river cruise.
Budget guesthouses cluster near Guilin South Station for onward connections to Yangshuo. Mid-range properties are plentiful throughout Guilin's center; luxury hotels concentrate along the lakes and the river.

Guilin's main north-south artery runs through the geographic heart of the city. Department stores, pharmacies, and noodle canteens line every block. The sweet scent of osmanthus tea drifts from corner stalls in autumn. Bus lines, taxis, and all the major transfer points radiate outward from here, making it the most logistically convenient base in Guilin.
- ✓ Every major Guilin landmark within a 20-minute walk
- ✓ Dense mix of restaurants from cheap local noodle shops to full-service hotel dining
- ✓ Multiple bus routes and round-the-clock taxis outside most hotels
- ✓ Widest price spectrum in the city from budget chains to five-star properties
- ✗ Traffic noise on the main road penetrates thinner hotel windows until late evening
- ✗ Restaurants on the tourist strip charge more than side-street equivalents two blocks away

The looped waterway connecting the Li River, Peach Blossom River, Banyan Lake, Rong Lake, Fir Lake, and Osmanthus Lake encircles Guilin's ancient core. After dark the Tang-dynasty pagodas glow amber and wooden cruise boats drift silently beneath stone bridges. The smell of night-blooming flowers mixes with cool water air. Hotels here feel embedded in Guilin's most photogenic layer.
- ✓ Evening lake walks past illuminated pavilions and ancient city walls are the most atmospheric in Guilin
- ✓ Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas, ancient banyan trees, and temple gardens within a five-minute stroll
- ✓ Boat tour departures directly from the lakeside promenade
- ✓ Dense concentration of Guilin rice noodle shops and local teahouses in surrounding lanes

Where the Li River and Peach Blossom River converge, a 360-million-year-old limestone massif shaped exactly like a drinking elephant anchors the neighborhood. The riverside park around it fills with the echo of tour-group commentary during daylight but quiets after the evening light show. Streets backing the park hold local breakfast stalls serving the flat rice noodles Guilin is famous for.
- ✓ Guilin's single most well-known view sits outside the window of several hotels here
- ✓ Riverside promenade good for early walks as river mist lifts off the water
- ✓ Authentic neighborhood life with local breakfast canteens alongside tourist facilities
- ✓ Shorter taxi ride to Guilin South Station for day trips to Yangshuo
- ✗ Park entrance crowds build sharply between 9am and noon in peak season
- ✗ Fewer mid-range dining options compared to the Zhongshan Road corridor

Bin Jiang Road traces the Li River's west bank through the city. Fishing cormorants perch on bamboo poles at dusk. The smell of river water mingles with charcoal smoke from barbecue carts lining the promenade. This strip appeals to travelers who want to watch river traffic from their hotel terrace: tour boats departing at dawn, bamboo rafts drifting past, and local fishermen casting nets in the half-light.
- ✓ Direct boarding point for Li River cruises downstream to Yangshuo
- ✓ The evening light painting the karst peaks across the water is extraordinary on clear days
- ✓ Quieter than the lakeside after the cruise boats dock for the night
- ✓ Easy taxi connection to both Guilin train stations
- ✗ Limited restaurant variety within walking distance compared to city-center blocks
- ✗ Heavy June-July rains raise river levels and can close the riverside promenade paths

East of the Li River, Qixing District wraps around a 120-hectare park that hides Guilin's biggest stalactite cave, two resident pandas, and seven karst peaks lined up like the Big Dipper. Life here feels lived-in, not staged. Morning markets hawk tangy fermented tofu and osmanthus cake beside crates of fresh produce. The air carries steamed rice and damp limestone.
- ✓ Seven Star Cave's cool echoing galleries give instant relief from summer humidity.
- ✓ Resident pandas at the park are a reliable draw for families
- ✓ Market prices here beat the tourist center for meals and snacks.
- ✓ Slower neighborhood pace with genuine local coffee shops and bakeries
- ✗ Twenty-minute walk or short taxi ride to the lakeside core and main city attractions.
- ✗ Fewer upscale dining options within immediate walking distance

The northern riverbank neighborhood borrows its name from Diecai Shan, the Folded Brocade Mountain whose layered limestone looks like bolts of silk stacked flat. It is Guilin's quietest scenic district. Locals practice tai chi on the river embankment at dawn. Osmanthus blossom smells strongest here in October. Karst peaks along this stretch stay crowd-free.
- ✓ Views from Diecai Summit are unobstructed and quiet before 8am
- ✓ River-facing guesthouses charge less than equivalent rooms in the southern scenic districts.
- ✓ Traditional teahouse culture survives on the side streets here
- ✓ A walkable riverbank route south leads to the main Guilin attractions
- ✗ Dining options thin out after 9pm compared to the city center
- ✗ Some budget guesthouses are dated. Check recent guest photos before booking.

The district around Guilin Railway Station is the city's main rail interchange. Fast trains to Guangzhou and overnight sleepers to Shanghai leave from here. Outside, luggage wheels rumble, street-grilled skewers scent the air, and vendors outside noodle shops call to travelers bound for Yangshuo.
- ✓ Best-value full en-suite rooms in the Guilin city area
- ✓ Twenty-four-hour food options including late-night rice noodle stalls
- ✓ Direct bus to Yangshuo departs from just outside the station entrance
- ✓ Short taxi to the lakeside core without dragging luggage through tourist zones
- ✗ Unlicensed taxi drivers on the forecourt require a firm refusal
- ✗ The neighborhood feels functional rather than atmospheric

Guilin North Station handles high-speed rail on the Guiyang-Guangzhou line, reaching Shenzhen in under two hours. The surrounding Lingui New District is Guilin's newest zone. Wide pavements, malls built in the last decade, hotels with modern fitments and none of the karst-view premiums of the historic core.
- ✓ Newest hotel stock in the Guilin area. Current plumbing, high-speed internet.
- ✓ Less traffic congestion than the historic center during peak tourism season
- ✓ Airport shuttle buses stop near the station plaza
- ✓ Lower rates than equivalent-star hotels near the scenic core
- ✗ Thirty to forty minutes by taxi to the Li River waterfront and main sights
- ✗ Neighborhood dining leans on chain restaurants. Local character is minimal.

Two hours north of Guilin city by road, the dragon-spine rice terraces of Longji carve steep mountain slopes. Small guesthouses cling to terraced hillsides in Zhuang and Yao villages of Ping'an and Dazhai. Wake inside the clouds. Pine smoke drifts up. Rice paddies lie somewhere below. This is nothing like urban Guilin.
- ✓ Sunrise and cloud-inversion views over the terraced slopes rank among southern China's most photographed scenes.
- ✓ Guesthouse meals come straight from the terraces: smoky pork, bamboo shoots, mountain greens.
- ✓ Zhuang and Yao cultural performances in the village squares most evenings
- ✓ Far quieter at night than any Guilin city option
- ✗ Road to the terraces takes roughly two hours from Guilin center. Overnight stay is required to catch sunrise.
- ✗ Mobile data is patchy on the upper terraces. WeChat Pay can fail. Carry cash.

Seventy kilometers downstream from Guilin city, Yangshuo sits in a valley where the Li River widens and karst peaks crowd in from every direction. West Street is the traveler spine with a lively restaurant scene. The surrounding countryside smells of wild citrus and river mud. Cycling through villages between peaks rewards every pedal stroke. Bamboo rafting on the jade-green Yulong River is pure calm. Watch farmers in conical hats work narrow terraces at dusk. Pure magic.
- ✓ Cycling routes between karst peaks are the most scenic in all of Guangxi
- ✓ International restaurant scene significantly more developed than Guilin city
- ✓ Bamboo rafting, rock climbing, and kayaking all within a short ride from the center
- ✓ Many Yangshuo hotels include bicycle rental in the room rate
- ✗ West Street bar music carries until late at night. Rooms facing it are noisy. Bring earplugs or book elsewhere.
- ✗ Reaching Guilin airport requires 1.5 to 2 hours of travel. This matters for early departures. Plan accordingly.

Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
China's May Day Golden Week and National Day Golden Week in October send millions of domestic tourists through Guilin every year. Lakeside and Li River waterfront hotels sell out entirely and rates reach their annual ceiling. Outside these two windows, two weeks ahead is enough for most of the year.
The Two Rivers Four Lakes area holds perhaps a dozen boutique guesthouses and small hotels. These sell out before the Zhongshan Road chain properties because they have far fewer rooms. If you have a specific lakeside address in mind, book it before anything else in your itinerary.
The classic itinerary puts two nights in Guilin city, then takes the Li River cruise downstream to Yangshuo for two or three more nights. Book the Yangshuo end first because it has significantly fewer beds than Guilin city and the best riverside properties fill earliest in the season.
June and July bring heavy rain to Guilin and the Li River rises considerably. Ground-floor riverside and lakeside rooms can feel damp and the views are frequently obscured by low cloud. Request an upper floor in any waterfront property if you are traveling during these months.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Reserve 6-8 weeks ahead for April through October. For Golden Week in early May and early October, book 2-3 months in advance as all tiers across Guilin sell out.
March and November offer pleasant weather and noticeably lower rates. Two weeks notice covers most properties except the lakeside boutiques in Guilin.
December through February is cool and quiet with negotiable walk-in rates everywhere except around Chinese New Year when domestic travel surges across the country.
Two to three weeks ahead works for most of the year in Guilin. Summer peak and Golden Week demand serious lead time for anything near the water.
