Guilin sits in the subtropics of southern China, and its climate is shaped by two competing forces that define almost everything about a visit: the East Asian monsoon, which floods the Li River valley from April through June, and the relatively dry continental air that settles in from late summer through winter. The result is a year with a clear wet season and a clear dry one, though the transition months tend to blur the line pleasantly. Humidity stays consistently around 70 percent year-round, which means even the cooler months carry a damp, soft quality to the air that amplifies the already-legendary mist that wraps the karst peaks on many mornings. Spring arrives tentatively in Guilin. March and April see temperatures climb from 17°C (63°F) toward 23°C (74°F) during the day. But rainfall accelerates sharply at the same pace, with April delivering around 226mm and May pushing past 320mm. The Li River runs high and photogenic, the hillside vegetation turns a deep, saturated green, and the famous mist clings to the limestone towers in ways that feel almost cinematic. The trade-off is genuine: downpours can be heavy and last for days. Summer proper, July and August, brings Guilin's hottest and most intense conditions, with highs reaching 32°C (91°F) and 33°C (91°F) respectively. But rainfall eases compared to June's 450mm peak. August is drier still at 147mm, making it hotter and clearer simultaneously. Autumn is arguably when Guilin earns its finest reputation: October, with highs of 26°C (79°F), low rainfall of 56mm, and the kind of clear blue skies that make the karst panoramas along the Li River and around Yangshuo look almost unreal. Winter is mild by Chinese standards but can feel sharp when the dampness settles in; January lows of 6°C (42°F) with a persistent humidity are the kind of cold that works into your bones more than the thermometer suggests. Worth noting for planning purposes: Guilin experiences Golden Week in early October, when domestic Chinese tourism surges across the country, and Chinese New Year in January or February sends another wave of visitors. These periods affect accommodation availability significantly and change the character of the riverbanks and cave sites considerably.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
October and November are the clearest choice. The crowds thin after Golden Week, the light is extraordinary for photographing the karst landscape and the old town lanes, and temperatures in the 20°C (69°F) to 26°C (79°F) range make walking through Guilin's parks and along the Two Rivers and Four Lakes circuit comfortable from morning until evening.
Hiking and Outdoor Adventure
Late September through October delivers the ideal combination of moderate temperatures and low rainfall. The trails around Longji Rice Terraces look their most spectacular as the harvest terraces turn golden, and the paths above Yangshuo dry out enough to be traversed without slipping. May also works if you can accept some rain in exchange for the deepest green hillsides of the year.
Budget-Conscious Travel
January and February offer the lowest visitor numbers and the most relaxed pricing outside of Chinese New Year itself. Guilin in winter is cold by southern standards, with highs around 11°C to 14°C (53°F to 57°F), but the cave attractions, the old town areas, and the river cruise infrastructure remain fully operational.
Photography and Scenic Appreciation
April and May reward patience. The mist and rainfall that make logistics tricky also produce the atmospheric conditions Guilin is most famous for internationally. A clear morning after overnight rain, with low cloud hanging between the peaks, is worth planning an entire trip around.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Guilin.

Year-Round Essentials
compact umbrella or packable rain jacket
Pack rain gear since even the dry months can produce surprise showers. The monsoon months make full waterproofing necessary. A compact umbrella helps. So does a packable poncho.
daypack with a waterproof cover
worth the minimal bulk.
sunscreen with a high SPF
Sun protection matters from April through October. The subtropical sun is strong even through thin cloud. Bring a hat. Use SPF 50 daily.
comfortable walking shoes with solid grip
Sturdy footwear is important year-round. Many of the most rewarding areas around Guilin and the nearby Li River corridor involve uneven stone paths. These get slick when wet. Tread carefully.
portable power bank
Carry a power bank. It's practical since the cave attractions and scenic areas sometimes have limited charging access. Phones drain fast in the cold.
insect repellent
worth carrying from May through September.
Winter (December through February)
Clothing
a mid-weight insulating layer, a windproof outer shell, Bring something warm enough for evenings. The damp cold in Guilin feels more penetrating than the temperature reading suggests. A fleece works.
Layering Tip
Thermal underlayers are not excessive for January.
Spring (March through May)
Clothing
Pack light layers that can be added or removed. Conditions shift between warm afternoons and cool, wet mornings. Adapt quickly.
Footwear
Waterproof footwear earns its place in the bag during these months more than any other. Puddles linger. Trails get muddy.
Summer (June through August)
Clothing
light, breathable fabrics
Footwear
Bring sandals for the hotel. That said, keep one pair of closed-toe shoes for cave visits and hiking. The ground stays perpetually damp regardless of above-ground conditions.
Accessories
a sun hat with a brim wide enough to be useful on the river cruise
Autumn (September through November)
Clothing
versatile mid-layers prove their worth
Layering Tip
Mornings and evenings in October can be noticeably cooler than midday. A light fleece or long-sleeve shirt makes the difference between comfortable and slightly miserable on the Li River as the sun drops.
Plug Type
Expect Type A (two flat parallel pins) as the most common standard. Type C and Type I sockets also appear. Bring a universal adapter.
Voltage
220V
Adapter Note
a universal travel adapter covers all eventualities.
Skip These Items
heavy hiking boots (overkill for most visitor itineraries) formal wear (nothing in the city or surrounding areas requires it) bulky bath towels (hotels universally provide them) Bring any medications or toiletries you assume you can only find at home. The pharmacies and convenience stores in Guilin are well-stocked. Still, brands differ. Leave the selfie stick at home. It's widely sold near the scenic sites. Yet adds little that your surroundings don't already do on their own. Just look up.
